Publishing Options: An Author's Guide to Journals
The ASA is working on a database of publishing outlets to assist sociologists (and others interested in related fields) in publishing their manuscripts. Scholars can increase their rate of publication (and journals increase the quality of their manuscripts) when they have access to information on appropriate outlets from a comprehensive listing of journals receptive to sociological materials.
This idea was the basis for Publishing Options: An Author’s Guide to Journals, first compiled by Lawrence J. Rhoades and published by ASA in 1981. Subsequent editions appeared in 1984 (compiled by Bettina Huber) and 1991 (compiled by Carla B. Howery). The dynamic nature of the information on the 300+ journals each edition included was such that a printed version outdated itself quickly and dramatically. The ASA decided, following the 1991 edition, not to update it again. Nonetheless, 17 years later, ASA still receives many requests each year about Publishing Options, hoping for a new edition or information on an alternative with comparable value to authors.
The new electronic version of Publishing Options allows editors and publishers to enter their information into an online form. The information will subsequently be downloaded into e-book format (with appropriate indices) and sold for a modest fee in the ASA online bookstore. The online database will also allow publishers to update their listings as needed, and ASA will update the e-book frequently to maintain accuracy.
Listings in Publishing Options are free. We anticipate the first version will be compiled in March 2009, so we have set an initial listing deadline of February 15, 2009.
