About

The Carla B. Howery Teaching Enhancement Grant program supports teaching projects that advance the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) within the discipline of sociology.  The Carnegie Foundation has defined SoTL as “problem posing about an issue of teaching or learning, study of the problem through methods appropriate to the disciplinary epistemologies, applications of results to practice, communication of results, self-reflection, and peer review” (Cambridge, 2001). 

Award

Howery Teaching Grants can support an individual, a program, a department, or a committee of a state/regional association.  ASA may award multiple grants, each up to $2,000.  Funds can be used for a variety of purposes including, but not limited to: summer salary, equipment, software, travel, meetings, transcription of interviews and survey implementation.  Principal criteria for the award are: the project advances the teaching and learning of sociology, serves as a seed project that will continue to have an impact over time, and will be systemic in its impact.  The criteria are intentionally flexible in order to accommodate innovative proposals.

Requirements

Your grant application should include the following :

1. A CV for all investigators on the grant, 

2. IRB Documentation where appropriate, and   

3.  A grant proposal , maximum of five pages, proposals should; 1. describe the project, including the problem it addresses, the approach to addressing the problem and the  empirical basis for evaluating that approach;
 2. briefly locate the project in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning literature as well as other     relevant literature; 3. include a detailed budget, and 4. describe the expected benefits of the project, including systemic impacts

ASA membership is not a criterion for application or selection for this grant, however, recipients must be ASA members before the final award is made. ASA membership involves registration as an ASA member via the ASA website and acceptance of and adherence to the ASA Code of ethics. Applications from all sub-areas of the discipline are welcome. Grantees must provide documentation of pertinent  IRB approval for the funded project.

Grantees are required to submit mid-year and final reports, and are strongly encouraged to prepare a poster for presentation at the Howery Teaching Enhancement Grant Benefit Reception "Just Desserts" at the ASA Annual Meeting. Attendance at the reception is optional, although encouraged. The expense of producing the poster can be included in the proposed budget.

Applications

Applications should be sent in PDF format to: apap@asanet.org. Only electronic submissions will be accepted. All materials must be received by the deadline to be considered. Notification of awards will be sent out in early April .
