Research, Professional Development, and Academic Affairs

The ASA Department of Research, Professional Development, and Academic Affairs has three broad sets of responsibility:

  • We lead ASA’s research efforts, which includes reporting on disciplinary trends and collecting data from individual and departmental members.
  • We work to advance sociology in colleges and universities, strengthen departments and their programs, and engender effective communication and collaboration between the ASA and sociology departments. We also work to identify and promote best practices in education, training, and teaching.
  • We collaborate with the other departments in the ASA Executive Office to support and foster sociologists’ careers at all levels—from recent Bachelors degree recipients to full professors. ASA is committed to advancing sociological careers both within academia and in society at large.

The department is responsible for TRAILS (Teaching Resources and Innovation Library for Sociology), Department Affiliates, Department Resource Group, Howery Teaching Enhancement Grants, and the annual conferences for department leaders, as well as publications related to the discipline of sociology, teaching, curriculum development, careers, and department management. We also lead initiatives to support high school teachers of sociology and community college faculty
