About the Sociology in Practice Settings Symposium

The Sociology in Practice Settings Symposium brings together Sociologists working outside of academia to connect and share their work with all those who are interested.  This symposium is reserved for submissions directly related to practicing sociology outside of academic settings. This year’s focus expands on ASA’s theme: Intersectional Solidarities: Building Communities of Hope, Justice, and Joy.

The day-long symposium includes a variety of presentation formats, including:

  • Interactive workshops: 45-minute immersive workshops for upskilling practitioners.
  • Panel presentation: 20-minute case study conducted in practice settings discussing key issues, methodologies, and the results obtained from the work. We strongly encourage these presentations to align with the conference’s overarching theme.
  • Lightning presentations: 10-minute presentations on innovative practices that highlight how sociological principles can be effectively applied in diverse practice settings.

These formats are designed to promote discussion of our work as it happens within the context of corporate, governmental, or nonprofit environments.

For those interested in presenting more traditional papers or reports of research, we encourage you to submit your papers to the Applied Social Research regular sessions, the Section on Sociological Practice and Public Sociology, and/or topic-specific sessions.

Topics

Symposium submissions may address a broad range of topics, including but not limited to:

  • Advice and examples of how you have responded to opportunities and challenges (e.g. methodological, substantive, communicative, expectation setting, working with teams, satisfying stakeholders, etc.) in your work setting.
  • The use of theory and sociological methods in the workplace, work/life balance, decision-making, and company culture.
  • Case study or evaluation of a specific application or implementation of sociological science in a practice setting.
  • Sociological tools or skills used in everyday sociological work.
  • Training workshops that emphasize research methods, analysis techniques, communicating findings, and other “how to” topics.
  • Be creative—we’re open to your ideas!
