Filipino Sociologists

Those of Filipino descent often have racial experiences that do not quite fit dominant categories in U.S. society, including Asian/American. Research shows this is due to the distinct colonial relationship the Philippines has with the United States. Through the Filipino Sociologists Community, ASA is working to create a space for connection, belonging and networking for Filipino sociologists, including those in the diaspora and in the Philippines, and their allies and friends.

Formed in 2022, this Community hopes to pursue the following activities during and outside of the ASA annual meeting:

  1. Promote scholarship
    1. Workshop manuscripts in progress
    2. Compile a comprehensive, searchable reference list
    3. Disseminate and exchange information
  2. Offer professional development
    1. Workshop dossiers
    2. Practice job talks
    3. Mentor early-career and mid-career scholars
  3. Network
    1. Annual dinner at the ASA conference
    2. Engage and support graduate students and graduate student training
    3. Outreach to Filipino sociologists and sociologists of the Philippines, Filipino America and/or Filipino diaspora
  4. Enhance teaching and curriculum
    1. Promote Filipino/Philippine sociology across classes
    2. Create/compile syllabi
