Member Petition
A member resolution entitled “Resolution for Justice in Palestine” was also included on the ballot. Nearly 38.9 percent of ASA’s membership who were eligible to vote in the 2024 election cast votes, and 34.3 percent voted on the resolution. 58.8 percent of the members who cast a vote on the member resolution voted in support of the resolution calling for the association to issue a call for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza and support members’ academic freedom, including but not limited to defending scholars’ right to speak out against Zionist occupation.
Having reached the required quorum and having received a majority of votes cast, the member resolution passed. The membership vote becomes an official position of the American Sociological Association. Accordingly, the ASA has issued a statement which can be read here.
* Council approved a policy and transition plan, detailed in Footnotes, to change the start date for all leadership positions to September 1 starting in 2024. Part of the approved plan is to elect two sets of candidates to run in the 2024 election. Though they will be elected during the same election, they will serve different terms. One set will begin their service immediately after the election in June 2024 for service on the 2024 and 2025 committees (a complete term of June 2024 to August 2025). And the other set will start their service in September 2024 and end in August 2026 to serve on the 2025 and 2026 committees.
