How to do I join ASA (or renew my membership) online?

Log in to the ASA homepage (if you don’t have a record in our system, you can create one). Once you log in you will be on your ASA Member Portal page.  From there, click “join/renew” and fill out the membership form. We strongly encourage online renewal, as your member benefits become available immediately. Need help? Call (202) 383-9005, Ext.1, or email [email protected].

Can I pay for membership with a check or money order?

AS OF MARCH 2021, UNITED STATES POSTAL SERVICE DELIVERIES TO ASA HAVE BEEN EXTREMELY DELAYED — OFTEN BY WEEKS. WE RECOMMEND RENEWING ONLINE OR SENDING YOUR CHECK THROUGH FEDEX OR UPS.

If you would like to pay for your membership with a check or money order, there are two options for doing this. The best way is to log into the ASA homepage (follow the directions on the question above). When you reach the end of the membership form, click “print invoice,” and send the completed paper form to us with your check or money order. If that is not possible, you can download the membership fillable form (link below), fill it out, and then print it.

Once you have an invoice or a completed paper membership form (you only need one or the other), send it with your check or money order to American Sociological Association, Membership Department, 1717 K Street NW, Suite 900, Washington, DC  20006.

What is my ASA Member Portal and how can I access it?

If you have an ASA username and password, you have an ASA Member Portal. Your ASA Member Portal is the place to join or renew your membership, register for the Annual Meeting, add sections, add journals, get receipts, change your password or username, access members-only resources such as the Member Directory, Department Directory, and much more.  To access your ASA Member Portal, simply log into the ASA website.

How can I subscribe to ASA journals as a member?

All ASA members receive online access to 10 ASA journals as a benefit of membership. All members (except International Associate members) can also opt-in to receiving one print journal of their choice. In addition, any ASA member may purchase additional print journal subscriptions on the ASA Member Portal, which can be accessed by logging in to the ASA website. Once you arrive on your ASA Member Portal click on “Purchase a Journal or Directory” under Join/Renew.

My journal hasn’t arrived. When was it mailed?

Visit our Mailing and Receipts Date page to review when journal subscriptions lists are pulled, when the journal is mailed, and when it arrives in the ASA office. This should provide a general idea of when your journal should arrive.

Can I change my journal selection during the year?

ASA is not able to change a print journal selection after you have joined or renewed. You may, however, add another print journal at any time from your ASA Member Portal, which you access by logging in to the ASA website.

What are the time parameters of the ASA membership year?

ASA memberships run on an anniversary-based year. In other words, memberships last for 365 days, regardless of when they are purchased. If you renew your membership before it expires, 365 days of membership will be added to your current expiration date. For example, if you renew your membership on January 15 and your current membership expires on February 4, your expiration date will be extended to February 4 the following year.

Does ASA offer multiple-year memberships?

After renewing or joining for the current year, ASA members (other than Student, Unemployed, and Affiliate members) can prepay for up to two years of future membership. Buying multiple years of membership allows members to lock in current membership dues rates. For some members, it also allows them to use grant funds that may not be available in future years. The prepayment process can be completed through the ASA Member Portal, which you access by logging in to the ASA website.

When can I renew my ASA membership?

Four months before your current membership expires, a renewal link will become available in your ASA Member Portal. We will send email reminders to you starting three months before your membership expires.

How do I report a change of address?

Log in to the ASA website to update your address and/or contact information. An instructional guide is available here.  If you prefer, address changes may be sent to the Member Support Center at [email protected]. Change of addresses are not accepted by telephone.

How can I get a copy of my receipt?

If you don’t immediately see your receipt in your inbox, please check your spam filter. Receipts are often caught in institutional spam filters. If you still do not see it, you can access a history of your transactions and any receipts through your ASA Portal. Simply log in to the ASA website. Once you are on your ASA Member Portal, click on “Order Receipts” under the heading Member Info.

Are memberships transferable?

Individual memberships are non-transferable.

Can I cancel my membership during the year and receive a refund?

Membership may be cancelled by contacting the ASA Member Support Center at [email protected], but ASA is not able to offer a refund for cancelled memberships.

May I add an additional section or journal to my membership mid-year?

If you are a current member, you may add sections or print journals by logging in to the ASA website and clicking on the appropriate options in your ASA Member Portal.

May I join a section without being a member?

No, section membership is reserved for current ASA members.

Do you offer lifetime memberships?

ASA does not offer lifetime memberships.

For any other questions, please contact the ASA Member Support Center at [email protected] or (202) 383-9005, Ext. 1.

ASA Membership Is Valuable for Students

I value my ASA membership for professional development, and having a sense of community and opportunities to make a difference. Through ASA Sections, I embraced a longstanding community of scholars, educators, and sociological practitioners. Many members have become my good friends and trusted mentors. And by utilizing ASA travel and research funds, I have built on projects that positively impact society. To give back to the ASA community, I became active in the Student Forum, supporting student peers as they come to embody the future of our discipline.

— Aaron Arredondo, Doctoral Candidate
Department of Sociology, University of Missouri

ASA is a Community

Something I really value about ASA is being part of a community. Although it didn’t happen right away, at this point I feel like sociologists all over the country and the world are among my closest friends and contacts, and meetings feel like reunions. It has given me lots of opportunities to get involved and to get to know new people every time I do. That’s given me a broader sense of the discipline and a feeling that I’m a part of it.

— Wendy Roth, Professor
University of Pennsylvania

ASA Has Collective and Individual Benefits

I value being part of an association that is fundamentally committed to increasing knowledge about society and that is willing to speak publicly about pressing issues.  As an individual sociologist I value the opportunities to connect to like-minded colleagues from whom I learn, by whom I am inspired, and with whom I have often collaborated.

— Rhys Williams, Professor
Loyola University Chicago
