Diversity in the Leadership of the ASA

This analysis responds to the question “Does the diversity of ASA elected leaders reflect the diversity of the membership?” The data cover 1986-2016 and are divided into two periods: 1986-2001 and 2002-2016. Division into two periods allows us to look at changes over time despite the limited number of cases. The division also corresponds to the availability of data, which are much more complete for the second period.

The data cover three elected offices and three elected committees: President, Vice President, Council At-Large, Committee on Committees, Committee on Nominations, and Committee on Publications. Candidates for Secretary are not currently included because elections occur only every three years, producing a much smaller number of cases.

The demographic categories cover gender (in two categories, the only available until 2013) and a set of intersectional categories combining gender and race/ethnicity. Regular, emeritus, and lifetime members are eligible for office, so the demographics for eligible members include only those categories.

For context on the profession of sociology overall, this page also provides links to data on diversity in the membership as a whole, and among doctorate recipients in sociology.

We recognize that diversity in ASA’s elected leadership is just one of many important dimensions of diversity within the Association and the discipline. It is a dimension for which we have available data, so we are starting here. But we are also pursuing data collection about additional dimensions of diversity and inclusion and welcome suggestions and resources from members.
