Webinar: Community Colleges. Getting Students Involved in Research, November 4, 2022, 12:00-1:00 p.m. Eastern. How do we inspire students to make new discoveries? With a high proportion of first generation and working-class students, community colleges face heightened face heightened challenges in integrating undergraduate research into the curriculum. Hear real-world examples, explore lessons learned, and get advice on how to advance undergraduate research in the community college curriculum. Virtual Proseminar for Graduate Students: Starting Your Own Writing Group, October 20, 3:00-4:00 p.m. Eastern. One of the most common pieces of advice graduate students receive is to write, write, and write. However, feeling the constant pressure to write can be overwhelming and creates anxiety — especially when trying to fit in among other obligations. Writing groups are one way to create a writing routine while building accountability and a community of support. This seminar will be led by graduate school coach Katy Peplin, who will share tips on forming and utilizing writing groups to help balance writing obligations and life. Free for members. Jackson (Portland State University), and Enrique Pumar (Santa Clara University), will help demystify the review process and provide tips to ensure that your review is successful. Learn how to anticipate potential critiques, center the process around your goals, and reap long-term departmental benefits.
  • Internship Programs for Undergrads, December 8, 1:00-2:00 p.m. Eastern. Internships are increasingly becoming a necessary credential for employability. Moreover, they allow students to learn work culture and practice professional networking prior to graduation. Cara Chiaraluce (Santa Clara University), Katie Cooper (University of Tampa), and Danielle Lavin-Loucks (Valaparaiso University) discuss ways to structure these programs in ways that will best serve your students’ educational and professional interests.

College Students and Mental Health: Strategies for Supporting Students, a Department Affiliates webinar currently available to all members. How can faculty members and department leaders do a better job supporting students in need? Sociologists Shirley Leyro (associate professor at Borough of Manhattan Community College and Mental Health First Aid Trainer) and Yvonne Vissing (professor at Salem State University and National Alliance on Mental Health Trainer) share strategies for responding to students and explore proactive ways that faculty members, departments, and institutions can support student mental health. ASA on the Issues: Letter Seeking Funding for Census Bureau

ASA takes public positions on issues related to policy for which there is consensus in the sociological literature or related to matters concerning the well-being of the discipline and profession. Recently, we signed a letter to Congressional appropriators urging them to provide the Census Bureau with the highest level of funding in the final FY2023 CJS bill.
